Vincas Mykolaitis – Putinas memorial apartment-museum
The construction of the Tauro g. 10 house began in 1936 according to the project of architect Moišė Cholem. After Lithuania regained the Vilnius region and moved the university to the capital, the apartment building became the Professor’s House – it was decided not to sell the apartments to city residents, but rather to give them to university professors.
This is how colleagues became neighbors. The first resident of the 3rd apartment was Balys Sruoga with his wife Vanda Daugirdaitė-Sruogienė and daughter Dalia. For a short time, before B. Sruoga returned from the Štuthof concentration camp, the writer Kazys Boruta lived in the apartment. After the death of B. Sruoga in 1947, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas moved into the apartment. Three authentic rooms remained in the apartment: a living room, a study and a bedroom. Furniture, books and other personal belongings of V. Mykolaitis-Putin are unique, purchased or donated by the family.
In the former room of Mykolaitis’ nephew Vytautas Balčiūnas, there is an exposition of Balis Sruoga, and a small exposition of Kazys Borutas in the living room. The apartment has preserved authentic brick stoves, parquet, windows and doors. In 1986, a museum was established in the apartment.
