VDA Gallery Artifex
“Artifex” is the textile gallery of the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Vilnius. Individual and collective exhibitions and joint projects of the works of academy employees, students and guests from all over the world are exhibited here. Artistic and cultural events are often held in the cozy gallery space of 36 square meters in the heart of the old town of Vilnius.
The Latin word “artifex” was chosen as the name of the gallery in order to emphasize the concept of not only an artist as a conceptual creator, but also a craftsman, a professional in his field. The dialogue between new ideas and technical mastery is important for the gallery, and it wants to go beyond the popular nowadays distinction between these aspects of artistic expression.
At the same time, the gallery remains open to both conceptual and technique-oriented creations. Artifex’s primary focus is materiality, understood in all its reflexive and physical senses. The gallery is interested in artistic projects that deal with this theme in different ways – from sounds to fabrics, from objects to texts, from thought to action. In this way, she seeks to re-articulate textile art in creative and unexpected ways and in ever-changing circumstances.
