Parks and forests in Vilnius

The parks of Vilnius are not only important historical, cultural, and recreational centres, but also natural oases in the heart of the city. They are a blend of natural beauty, the legacy of the past and modern life. The capital has more than 40 parks, creating habitats for a wide range of animals and plants! Vingis Park, almost in the centre of Vilnius, is a pine forest with features of an old-growth (primary) forest and boasts the oldest pine trees in Lithuania – more than 200 years old. Thanks to the many old trees and their hollows and other habitats, the river park is home to a wide variety of birds, including barn owls, the black woodpecker (Dryocopus – the largest woodpecker in Europe), great spotted woodpeckers, robins, and goosanders. More than 100 species of birds can be found in the park. A natural walking route for Vingis Park has been developed and is accessible, so we invite you to follow it and explore the area. Vilnius parks and forests are home to Europe’s most spectacular wild orchids, the lady’s slipper orchid, particularly sensitive to the environment. Blackbirds and wood nuthatches sing their songs. And everyone waits for the harbingers of summer – when the common swifts arrive, summer seems to arrive with them. Although they are now considered to be true city dwellers, when there were no big cities, they used to nest in the hollows of the tallest and oldest pine trees. Want to escape the hustle and bustle, see the capital’s most beautiful panoramas, and see how green Vilnius really is? Visit the Pavilniai and Verkiai Regional Parks, which have many viewpoints, walking routes, and rich biodiversity. Vilnius parks are not only centres of recreation, culture and community meetings but also strongholds of nature conservation. They offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, a chance to experience history and the beauty of nature in one place. We invite you to discover this green side of Vilnius!
