Chiune Sugihara Sakura Park

The cherry blossom festival – hanami – is celebrated not only in Japan. Chiune Sugihara Sakura Park on the right bank of the Neris River, along Upės Street, becomes the most visited place in Vilnius every spring. The sakura blossoms in abundance do not leave anyone indifferent, people hurry to take pictures with the pink clouds, as if they had landed on the meadow.

An avenue of 200 Japanese cherry trees was planted here in 2001. commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara. This is a gift from the Japanese government to Lithuania and the city of Vilnius in order to honor the person who saved more than 6 thousand people during the Second World War. lives of people of Jewish nationality.

Although cherry blossoms bloom for only a couple of weeks in the second half of April, organizing a picnic with a book or a cup of tea on the lawn with a view of the Neris River is also worthwhile at other times of the year.
