Jerusalem Sculpture Garden. Vlado Vildžiūno galerija
In the 1970s, the Sculpture Garden was established in Vilnius Jerusalem district at the initiative of sculptor Vladas Vildžiūnas. It is the first park of contemporary Lithuanian sculpture in Vilnius, unique in that it was born and is maintained and constantly created by the efforts of the sculptors themselves. It played a special role in the 1970s and 1980s, becoming a space of free thought and artistic expression, where the patterns of socialist realism were broken and authentic creative connections were forged with the free world behind the Iron Curtain.
This garden was the birthplace of V. Vildžiūnas’ monument to M. K. Čiurlionis, the sculptures “Lithuanian Ballad”, “Barbora Radvilaitė”, etc., works by G. Karalius, P. Mazūras, M. Navakas, V. Urbanavičius and other authors, representing Lithuanian sculpture in Lithuania and abroad. Currently, the garden’s exposition contains over 50 works. Their authors are Lithuanian classic modernists (V. Vildžiūnas, T. K. Valaitis, V. Urbanavičius, M. Navakas, P. Mazūras, K. Jaroševaitė), the younger generation (G. Akstinas, A. Lankelis, K. Vildžiūnas, A. Kuzma) and foreign sculptors (G. S. Kitagawa, A. Strumillo).
Since 1999, the Vladas Vildžiūnas Gallery, in addition to the changing exposition of the 20th–21st century Lithuanian and Lithuanian diaspora art collection of V. and M. Vildžiūnas, has been hosting authorial exhibitions, artistic and educational projects, concerts, and an art studio. Non-commercial works of art can be purchased here.
